To demonstrate our gratitude for their service and sacrifice, commemorative Home of the Brave quilts are being made for each fallen serviceperson's next of kin. The quilts are replicas based on the U.S. Sanitary Commission Quilts (Soldier's Quilts) made during the Civil War.

Please Volunteer to Help a Make a Home of the Brave Quilt

For a quilter a true labor of love is measured patch by patch and stitch by stitch. Throughout the state of Arizona our quilters have a reputation for perpetuating the art of quilting and for making quilts for fundraisers and a multitude of charitable causes.

I am asking our Arizona quilters to join with other quilters across the United States and show their support to the families of our Arizona service men and women who have died during Operation Iraqi freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).

* To date over 4,000 quilts have been made and presented to the families of our fallen "soldiers" throughout the United States and more quilts are in the process of being completed. Arizona became part of this grassroots project in March 2006 when we had lost over 60 of our native sons and daughters in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sadly, as of May 2011, Arizona has 148 fallen heroes (Arizonans and those with ties to Arizona) who have given their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

How Can You Help?

Volunteers are needed to make quilt blocks, quilt tops, and quilts. Monetary donations are needed for quilting supplies, postage, and office supplies.

Please demonstrate your support to the families that have lost and given so much by making at least one album block or cross X block. Completed quilt tops (15 blocks) or completed quilts are greatly appreciated. If you make a quilt top, we have long arm quilters who are generously donating their time to quilt the tops. Good quality 100% cotton Civil War or 19th century reproduction fabrics are preferred, but any fabric that has the "feel" or "flavor" of the 19th century will be acceptable. Block and Quilt instructions may be found by following the links. If you are interested in making a quilt top or a completed quilt and need assistance with sashing fabric, batting, and or backing fabric please contact me.

This project is not about politics, but about giving a gift of love. These families have lost a son, daughter, husband, wife, grandchild, mother or father and nothing can replace that loss, but we can show our support and comfort them by wrapping them in a quilt that says we care.

UPON THE ALTAR OF LIBERTY…

I pray that our Heavenly father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of liberty.

President Abraham Lincoln, letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston upon the loss of her sons in battle, 21 November 1864.
